Over three decades in Congress, Sheila Jackson Lee worked in public and private to represent Houston.

Sheila Jackson Lee had a mission. She was determined to live up to the standard that U.S. Rep. Mickey Leland , a Houston icon, had set when he represented the Fifth Ward in Congress before his tragic death in a plane crash in Ethiopia in 1989. “I just have his spirit in my soul,” she told me in an interview last year as we talked about her approach to being a member of Congress for nearly 30 years. Jackson Lee died on Friday at the age of 74.

No one loved Houston more than Sheila Jackson Lee While it is a common story for members of Congress to lose touch with their districts, Jackson Lee said Leland, despite being an important national player who also worked on international issues like addressing famine in Africa, was always in the district making sure people felt represented. “He was a reverent and consistent fighter for his district,” Jackson Lee said of the lesson she tried to apply during her decades in office.

She easily won the primary and cruised to another term in Congress. Jackson Lee was first elected to Congress in 1994 after having served two terms on the Houston City Council. In Washington, she distinguished herself as a prolific filer of legislation.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is 'relentless' flagbearer in House Democrats' social justice push The trail would extend along Texas Highway 3 and Interstate 45 to Freedmen’s Town and Emancipation Park in Houston. Freedmen’s Town was a center of opportunity for freed people in the years after Granger’s order and home to more than 400 African-American businesses by 1915. By 1920, a third of Houston’s population lived there.
