Researchers have developed a smart jacket equipped with environmental sensors, heat-generating yarns, color-changing yarns, and AI to regulate temperature and prevent overheating, addressing the safety concerns associated with prolonged use of electronic textiles.
Electronic textiles, such as heating pads and electric blankets, offer comfort and pain relief. However, their prolonged use poses a risk of heat-related illnesses, including hyperthermia or burns. Addressing this concern, a team of researchers has developed a 'smart' jacket equipped with innovative features to ensure user safety.
This jacket integrates environmental sensors, heat-generating and color-changing yarns, and artificial intelligence (AI) to regulate temperature and prevent overheating. The researchers' findings, published in a scientific journal, highlight the potential of this technology to enhance the safety of e-textiles. While some e-textiles already incorporate sensors to monitor vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, and movement, or connect with mobile apps for temperature control, users remain vulnerable to heat-related injuries. Older individuals, especially those residing in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, are particularly susceptible due to decreased heat sensitivity and limited temperature monitoring.Jeanne Tan and her collaborators aimed to improve e-textile safety by combining AI-driven systems with thermochromic yarn. This innovative fabric warms the user without causing overheating and provides readily visible temperature readings for easy monitoring. The intelligent heating jacket, constructed from their new e-textile, utilizes silver-coated yarn for efficient and flexible heat generation, replacing the traditionally bulky carbon fiber. The jacket's AI-based temperature control system, trained on a diverse group of 50 individuals, learns and predicts comfortable heat settings across varying environmental conditions like temperature, humidity, and wind speed.Adding a crucial safety feature, the jacket incorporates two types of color-changing yarns. One yarn transitions from purple to pink when the heating temperature exceeds 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), providing a visual alert during the day. In low-light conditions, a polymeric optical fiber yarn emits a blue, yellow, or red glow to indicate temperatures of 86 F (30 C), 104 F (40 C), and 122 F (50 C), respectively. In a demonstration, the jacket's thermochromic and optical fiber yarns accurately displayed heating temperatures, while the AI component efficiently predicted and maintained a comfortable temperature for the wearer, even when external conditions changed. The team envisions various applications for their e-textile technology in the future, ranging from heated car seats and furniture to advanced spacesuits.
