Meet the candidates: Alabama's republican primary for auditor
) - An incumbent and a political newcomer are the choices for the republican nominee for Alabama ’s auditor. Alabama is an open primary state, meaning voters who select the republican ballot will have the option of voting for either current-Auditor Andrew Sorrell or attorney Derek Chen to face off against democrat Violet Edwards in November.
The Office of the Alabama State Auditor is in charge of performing audits of the accounts and records of the state treasurer and the Department of Finance. Auditor Sorrell was first elected in 2022 after serving in Alabama’s House of Representatives for House District 3 in Colbert Co. “I’m doing everything I can to be a fiscal hawk, but as good as we’ve done the past four years, I believe I can actually do better in my next term,” said Sorrell.
“I’m ready to roll day one, and I’ve done an excellent job for four years, and I know sometimes there can be anti-incumbent sentiment out there -- I’ve felt that before. I say, ‘look at the job people are doing and ask yourself if they deserve to continue serving or not?
