Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has unveiled a new Statewide Attendance Dashboard designed to monitor student attendance and address the growing issue of chronic absenteeism across the state. The tool aims to provide rapid and transparent data to help identify and support students who are falling behind due to missed school days.
Gov. Mike DeWine on Wednesday introduced a new Statewide Attendance Dashboard that will help track student attendance across the state.
The new tool is said to offer an unprecedented level of speed and transparency as Ohio tries to combat chronic absenteeism A student is considered chronically absent in Ohio after missing at least 10% of the minimum number of hours required in the school year for any reason – including excused absences. Students only need to miss two or three days per month to be on track to be considered chronically absent.
'Those days add up by the end of the year,' DeWine said during a news conference Wednesday. 'Each chronically-absent student is missing nearly one month of school. Last year across Ohio, one out of four of our children missed a month of school. And in our biggest cities, the number is significantly higher.''
When students are not in school, they are not learning, and the consequences are significant,' he said. 'Students with good attendance are three times more likely to be proficient readers, and nearly four times more likely to be proficient in math, and almost 12 times more likely to graduate on time than students who are chronically absent.'
