On Sunday, True Vision Church honored the late Rev. Sherman Clifton Byrd as one of San Antonio's leaders in leading Juneteenth celebrations.
Among long rows of white markers, the Rev. Sherman Clifton Byrd lies at rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery . The inscription for the Navy veteran reads, “Beloved Husband and Father.” Not etched on the marble headstone is another honor — “Director of the Texas Emancipation Day Commission .” Byrd was instrumental in promoting the importance of San Antonio ’s annual Juneteenth celebration.
