Sweden strengthens its commitment to NATO by sending over 500 troops to Latvia, marking the country's largest deployment since joining the alliance. This move aims to bolster the eastern flank bordering Russia in response to heightened security concerns following the invasion of Ukraine.

Sweden has deployed hundreds of troops to Latvia as part of a mission aimed at reinforcing NATO 's eastern flank bordering Russia . Over 500 Swedish soldiers arrived in the Baltic nation to join a Canadian-led multinational brigade, marking Stockholm's most significant military deployment since its accession to NATO in March 2020. The deployment comes amid heightened security concerns in the region following Russia 's invasion of Ukraine .

A ship carrying personnel and equipment from Sweden's 71st mechanized infantry battalion arrived in Riga on Saturday, escorted by the Swedish air force and a combined force of Swedish and Latvian naval vessels. Images released by the Swedish armed forces showcased Swedish Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) tracked armored combat vehicles, a model that has seen action in Ukraine. While the precise size of the contingent was not disclosed, reports indicate that the mission will involve 550 Swedish troops. They will be integrated into one of eight NATO brigades positioned along the alliance's eastern flank, stationed outside the town of Adazi, near Riga. Lieutenant Colonel Henrik Rosdahl, commander of the Swedish battalion, characterized the arrival as both a historic occasion and a reflection of the evolving security landscape. He stated, 'This is a historic day, but at the same time, it's our new normal.' Sweden's entry into NATO in March 2024 was prompted by Russia's aggression in Ukraine and the resulting security concerns across Europe. This followed Finland's own decision to join the alliance a year earlier, abandoning decades of military neutrality. Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonsson emphasized the significance of the deployment on X, stating, 'Sweden is present in Latvia with troops within the framework of NATO's Forward Land Forces (FLF). This marks a historic milestone. As part of NATO's collective defense, we strengthen the security of the Baltic region and stand united for a safer future.
