Thousands evacuate after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Japan, as officials warn of stronger quakes in the coming days.

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has shaken Japan’s northern coast, briefly triggering a tsunami warning and putting one of the most critical semiconductor hubs in the world to a real-world stress test.

The earthquake reportedly hit at 4:53 pm local time in waters off Iwate Prefecture, on the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan’s main island, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency .The affected region sits near the nation’s semiconductor corridor, which accounts for roughly 21 percent of global chip output. The shock took place close to major facilities run by TSMC, Sony, Renesas, and many automotive chip makers.Reports revealed tremors were also felt across a wide area, including in the capital Tokyo, hundreds of miles to the south. Officials initially issued a tsunami warning for waves up to 10 feet . Japan’s northern coast hitIn a statement, JMA reported that the quake’s epicenter was located 62 miles east of the city of Miyako, off the Sanriku coast, at a depth of six miles . A detailed analysis later found it met national criteria for issuing a warning about a potential subsequent quake. The agency also warned the first tsunami waves could reach parts of the northern coastline immediately. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi then held a press conference, urging residents to evacuate to higher ground or safer buildings.Takaichi said the quake reached a maximum seismic intensity of lower 5 in Aomori Prefecture. “Tsunami waves are expected to hit repeatedly,” she revealed. “Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted.”JMA added that areas hit by strong shaking face an elevated risk of rockfalls and landslides. It called for continued caution as seismic activity and rainfall persist. However, within two hours of the earthquake, authorities recorded tsunami waves that measured just 2.7 ft . Reports highlighted that the warning was then downgraded to an advisory, before being fully lifted. The Ring of FireThe seismic event drew immediate attention to Japan’s semiconductor hub, as the affected northeastern corridor hosts crucial facilities operated by TSMC, Sony, and Renesas Electronics. With Japan contributing an estimated 21 percent of global semiconductor output, even short-term disruptions could ripple through supply chains already strained by demand for electric vehicles and AI hardware.According to reports, while no major damage has been confirmed so far, the next 48 hours will be critical as manufacturers inspect cleanrooms, recalibrate sensitive lithography equipment, and assess whether operations can safely resume without risking yield losses or contamination.Japan is highly vulnerable to earthquakes because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. The area also contains over 900 active or dormant volcanoes, which is about two-thirds of the world’s total. As a result, Japan experiences about 1,500 earthquakes a year, and accounts for nearly 18 percent of the world’s seismic activity. In 2011, this seismic exposure culminated in one of the country’s worst disasters, when a magnitude 9.1 quake struck the coast of Tohoku, triggering tsunami waves as high as 133 feet. The disaster escalated into a combined earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, leaving about 18,500 people dead. Over 164,000 residents were evacuated, with thousands still unable to return to their homes.
