The DZOFilm X-Tract 18-28mm T8 is a new wide-angle macro probe lens designed for filmmakers and photographers who need to capture intricate details up close. With a 2.1:1 magnification ratio and impressive image quality, this lens delivers exceptional results in tight spaces.
The DZOFilm X-Tract 18-28mm T8 is a wide-angle macro probe lens designed for extreme close-up photography and videography. Like other macro probe lenses, the X-Tract boasts a long, slender design that allows it to fit into tight spaces and get incredibly close to subjects. It can focus as close as 47.3 centimeters (1.6 feet), with a working distance of just six millimeters (0.2 inches). This results in a remarkable 2.1:1 maximum magnification ratio at its closest focusing distance.
DZOFilm promises exceptional image quality thanks to the lens's advanced optical design. It features seven high-refractive index (HRI) lenses and six extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, effectively correcting for chromatic aberrations, distortions, and other optical flaws common in typical probe lenses. The innovative distribution of HRI lenses delivers prime-level image quality and accurate color temperature, minimizing the yellowish tint often seen in other probe lenses. Distortion is kept within plus-minus 2% across the entire zoom range, with near-zero distortion and focus breathing at 24mm, ensuring precise rendering of intricate micro-details.While photographers may not be as concerned about focus breathing, it's a crucial factor for videographers. Given DZOFilm's focus on cinema lens technology, it's unsurprising that they've addressed this issue in the X-Tract 18-28mm T8. The lens promises focus breathing effects of just 0.5% at 24mm, significantly lower than the typical 39.2% found in other 24mm probe primes. The X-Tract also boasts an impressive relative illumination of 70.7%. Constructed from aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, the lens is relatively lightweight for its size, measuring 41.5 centimeters (16.3 inches) long and weighing 1.09 kilograms (2.4 pounds). It features an anodized coating for enhanced durability and is rated IP57 to resist dust and water. The front 28 centimeters (11 inches) of the lens are waterproof. True to its cinema lens heritage, the X-Tract comes equipped with typical cinema design features, including an M0.8 gear pitch, 300 degrees of focus throw, clear magnification ratio markings, a waterproof line, rotation scales, and a native PL mount. The lens is fully manual, with on-lens rings controlling the iris, focus, and zoom. The iris itself has 10 aperture blades
