WILLOWICK, Ohio - A mother is suing the troubled Shoregate Towers apartments for receiving an eviction letter after 40 days of virtually no water service. According to the suit, filed last Friday, Kriss Smith ’s unit had little to no function water between January 23 and March 4.
“It was almost biblical. I mean, you don’t have water for 40 days and 40 nights,” said Imani Maatuka, Smith’s lawyer. Kriss also lives with her 17-year-old son and 78-year-old mother. Maatuka said the three family members relied on one sink to meet their daily hygiene needs. Despite verbal commitments to help, management did not solve the problem until after Smith’s lawyers reached out to management, according to the lawsuit. Shortly after the water was restored, Smith received a three-day eviction notice. Maatuka alleges the eviction came as a direct response to her firm’s involvement.Shoregate Towers has faced legal trouble before. In 2024, the building’s owner, Lemma Getachew, was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and 3-years probation for four counts of property maintenance code violations following a parking garage collapse.19 News spoke to the apartment complex’s new management, who claim to have barely taken on the role on March 4. Staff deferred questions to Dynasty Properties Inc., the company that owns the building.
