The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is a flagship phone that prioritizes photography, boasting a versatile quad-camera system with a standout 200MP periscope camera. This review dives into the camera performance, showcasing its exceptional detail, dynamic range, zoom capabilities, and video recording quality.
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra has arrived, and it's clear from the first glance that this device is a powerhouse for photography enthusiasts. The Silver Chrome model, in particular, evokes the aesthetic of a classic Leica camera with its dual-tone design and a small, camera-like viewfinder at the back. Xiaomi even offers a matching camera kit that transforms your phone into a point-and-shoot camera, complete with all the features a dedicated photographer would appreciate.
The most striking feature is the imposing camera island, which dominates the back of the phone and could even be described as a 'camera volcano'. This module houses the impressive quad-camera setup. A standout feature is the high-resolution 200MP periscope camera, offering a 4.3X native zoom. While the zoom isn't groundbreaking, the high resolution of the sensor enables excellent optically cropped results. The phone supports up to 120X digital zoom, and surprisingly, the quality remains impressive even at this extreme level. The other cameras include two 50MP sensors – one acting as a standard ultrawide snapper, and the other a 3X telephoto lens that excels in portraits and telemacro photography. Camera performance is exceptional, with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra scoring 154 and 151 points in DxOMark's photo and video tests, respectively. This doesn't mean the other cameras take bad photos or videos; rather, the Xiaomi and Samsung simply perform better. The periscope camera delivers superb sharpness and detail, capturing images with natural tones and zero overprocessing or oversharpening. Dynamic range is excellent, with the camera adeptly handling highlights and shadows. Exposure is generally accurate, although the Ultra sometimes leans towards more contrasty images, adding a unique character to the photographs. The 50MP 3X camera produces excellent portraits, capturing subjects with a natural and lifelike quality. While the periscope camera can deliver even higher quality images, the telephoto lens offers the perfect focal length for intimate portraits. The Ultra shines in low-light conditions, delivering tack-sharp details and vibrant colors. It's a fantastic choice for night photography enthusiasts. The zoom capabilities of the Ultra are truly impressive. The image quality remains excellent across all zoom levels, from 1X to 120X. Even at 120X, intricate details on a statue nearly a kilometer away are visible. The star of the show is the 200MP 4.3X periscope camera, which boasts a sensor with ample resolution to achieve exceptional results in both optical and digital zoom. This makes the Ultra incredibly versatile, even exceeding the 10X zoom mark, where quality typically begins to decline. The ultrawide camera performs well too, capturing images with good detail and slightly less dynamic range compared to the main camera. The corners exhibit some distortion, however. The selfie camera is decent, offering detailed selfies, but the colors and subject exposure are not exceptional. The phone can record 8K videos at 30fps, but the more impressive feature is the 4K120fps video recording supported by both the main and periscope cameras. 4K120fps footage can also be captured for cinematic slow-motion effects, but this feature is only available in Video Pro mode and limited to the main and ultrawide cameras. The main camera delivers exceptional video quality. It boasts crisp details, natural colors, and excellent dynamic range. The camera is also very well stabilized, ensuring smooth footage even during movement. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra's periscope camera earns top marks in our Camera Score test. It's encouraging to see the competition intensifying and challenging Samsung's dominance. The Ultra is a compelling package with great dynamics, superb sharpness, and natural colors. It performs exceptionally well in various scenarios, making it a top contender in the smartphone camera market. While the selfie camera could be better, the rear camera system is undeniably impressive and more than capable of compensating for this minor shortcoming
