The animated series Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord aims to redeem the legacy of Solo: A Star Wars Story by reintroducing Dryden Vos and giving him a more significant role in the franchise canon.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars : Maul - Shadow Lord , season 1, episodes 9 and 10. In May 2018, Disney and Lucasfilm released Star Wars ' second anthology movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story — and it ended up being one of the franchise's biggest misfires.
Solo introduced audiences to a younger version of Harrison Ford's Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich, and his life before becoming Star Wars' most lovable rogue. This included him meeting Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian , as well as his romantic history with Crimson Dawn member Qi'ra . Although Solo wasn’t critically maligned, it certainly didn’t earn nearly as positive a reception as many of the other Star Wars movies.
It holds an average yet still"Fresh" 69% Tomatometer among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter ranks at 63%. More importantly, Solo was a box office bomb, earning a mere $393 million worldwide. It remains the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie of all time.
As a result, Solo: A Star Wars Story doesn’t have the best reputation in this franchise set in a galaxy far, far away. While the story itself provided a fun enough adventure, it didn't really add anything meaningful to Star Wars' canon. Now, however, eight years after its release, Star Wars can finally solve one of Solo's most glaring issues.
The animated Disney+ TV show Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord has reintroduced one of Solo’s more underwhelming characters, giving him a bigger and more pivotal role in Star Wars' overarching story. Maul And Dryden Vos Reunite In Shadow Lord Season 1’s Final Episodes During the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra worked for Crimson Dawn crime boss Dryden Vos, played by Paul Bettany.
She later betrayed and killed Dryden, then blamed fellow Crimson Dawn member Tobias Beckett for his death when she reported back to Maul. At this point in the Star Wars timeline, Maul was leading the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate, making him Dryden’s boss. This ending felt hollow, however. The characters were never fully developed, and the twist never really paid off, at least on screen.
After Solo's release, Dryden Vos made a silent cameo in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 as one of the representatives of the Shadow Collective, Maul’s crime syndicate. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, set a year later, has finally brought Vos back into play. Dryden, now voiced by Scott Whyte, appears in the last two episodes of Shadow Lord season 1 to bail out the former Sith Lord and help him escape from the Imperial-controlled planet, Janix.
In Shadow Lord season 1, episode 9, “Chapter 9: Strange Allies,” Dryden contacts Maul and offers to rescue him and his cohorts from Janix. In exchange, he asks Maul to kill Rintero, the current head of Crimson Dawn. Dryden upholds his end of the bargain at the end of episode 10, “Chapter 10: The Dark Lord,” so now Maul must carry out his job to make Dryden the new head of Crimson Dawn.
Already, Dryden Vos has become a more active character, and this can only get better in Shadow Lord season 2. Shadow Lord Season 2 Could Retroactively Make Solo Better Whatever positive elements Solo: A Star Wars Story has, Dryden Vos is not one of them. He failed to measure up as a compelling Star Wars villain, making his demise at Qi’ra’s hands feel lackluster.
To be fair to Paul Bettany, Dryden Vos had to be reimagined when Michael K. Williams, who originally played the character as an alien, was unable to participate in Solo's reshoots. It's possible that the rewrites to accommodate Bettany taking over the role diminished some of Dryden’s original appeal. Regardless, while Solo wasn’t able to do Dryden Vos justice, spending more time with him in Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord season 2 could rectify that.
Viewers can finally learn what makes him such a formidable figure within the Crimson Dawn hierarchy, how he got his facial scars, and what it is he's truly after. Vos was a one-note villain in Solo, but now, Star Wars' animated canon can do for Dryden what it did for Maul. It will also be interesting to see what Dryden and Maul are like together as begrudging partners, and whether Dryden can match Maul's cunning.

Admittedly, Dryden Vos’ scheme with Maul will only be partially successful since, as revealed in Solo, Maul will ultimately still be the one controlling Dryden Vos and Crimson Dawn. Still, that doesn’t mean Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord can’t at least make Dryden a much more compelling character in its next season. If the show accomplishes that goal, that will, in turn, make Solo: A Star Wars Story a more enjoyable part of the Star Wars canon.
