According to safety experts, drowning remains the leading cause of death for children between 1 and 4 years old. In Texas alone, more than 100 children drowned last year, and many of those deaths could have been prevented with simple precautions. At the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston, swim instructors and safety advocates are teaching families how to reduce risks around the water.
James Browning says water safety conversations should begin early and focus on helping children feel comfortable while also understanding the dangers.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that someone in trouble will yell or splash for help,” James Browning, Director of Aquatics at Evelyn Rubenstein JCC said. “In reality, drowning is often quick, quiet, and easy to miss. ” Experts say constant supervision is critical, especially for young children. Parents are encouraged to watch for signs of panic or distress and remain fully attentive whenever children are in or near the water.
Browning also recommends choosing life-guarded swimming areas whenever possible and having children swim with a friend or sibling. He says introducing children to water safety at a young age can help build confidence and awareness. The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center offers swim lessons for children as young as six months old, helping kids learn basic survival skills and become more comfortable in the water.
Safety experts also stress that floaties and pool toys should never replace active adult supervision or a properly fitted life jacket. Officials say the goal is not to make families afraid of the water, but to help them stay prepared. Having a designated “water watcher,” learning CPR, and keeping full attention on children can help prevent tragedies this summer. Class is in session!
