New Russia Township Trustees voted Tuesday to deny a rezoning request for a “mega site” project near the Lorain County Regional Airport.

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio - New Russia Township trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to deny a rezoning request tied to a proposed industrial development near the Lorain County Regional Airport. Liberty Development had requested the zoning change for more than 600 acres of farmland to convert the area into an industrial site.

The broader proposal covered more than 1,000 acres. Trustees said Liberty Development can address their concerns and reapply. Drew Siler with Liberty Development said the goal is to bring jobs to the area, whether from one business or many.Multiple residents attended previous meetings to oppose the development. Kim Polen of New Russia said she supported Tuesday’s vote.Polen said uncertainty about what businesses would move in drove her opposition. “Not knowing what is coming. Also the possible pollution… light, sound, just a change in the atmosphere of our rural community,” she said., a group behind the proposal, said the organization understands the concerns of people in New Russia and they will work with people to address them. “We understand the concerns of the residents so we will continue to work with the trustees and the developer to address and relieve those concerns.”“We want to keep anything out that we don’t want. Today it could be data centers, tomorrow something else,” she said.Imposters posing as law enforcement targeting Portage County residents Babysitter left child without food or water for up to 21 hours until parents came home, investigators sayGarfield Heights firefighters battle fire at vacant house
