Parents and staff demand answers about Marysville School District's financial crisis and what its future looks like.
Several demonstrations have taken place by unions and parents over the past 15 months. Those involved are demanding answers to how the district was being run prior and why there wasn’t more transparency.
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal gave an official notice to MSD Superintendent Dr. Zac Robbins, and Board of Directors Vice President Connor Krebbs that a Financial Oversight Committee would be convened to dig into its financial situation. The former Board of Directors President Wade Rinehardt resigned from his position on June 17, citing personal reasons. This is not the only resignation that the district has had recently. The former Executive Director of Human Resources Alvin Cooper, resigned on June 13, after being accused of mismanagement. A letter from the Director of Finance Lisa Gonzales to OSPI accused Cooper of intimidating staff. Gonzales also asked the school board to put Cooper and Robbins on leave to allow for a full investigation. The district started working on its budget deficit more than a year ago and when it could not create a balanced budget for the 2023-24 school year, the Marysville District was forced into financial binding conditions with the state. OSPI is now forced to review the district's financial situation and recommend a path forward to financial stability. In response to this newest action against the state, Robbins said in a written statement, “I feel the district will benefit from this action. The district takes the binding conditions very seriously and will continue to work hard to meet each of the required conditions.” The financial issues the district is dealing with are in addition to Robbins recommending that the district close or consolidate Cascade Elementary School, Liberty Elementary School, and Totem Middle School, beginning with the 2025-26 school year. At a recent school board meeting Robbins said that these decisions are not taken lightly and that he considered declines in enrollment, educational and physical impacts to families, the age of the school buildings, deterioration of those facilities, and how the older schools match up with current building codes.Regarding the new financial oversight of the district, Reykdal said OSPI would be creating a committee and start the process “in the near future.”
