Richard Woodham said he takes pride in participating in this trial, no matter the outcome.
Woodham has non-small cell lung cancer , and the options to treat it have almost run dry.
“And by the studies they do on me, it could probably help somebody else and cure them,” Woodham said. “This was our first infusion of a radioligand patient here in Dothan, Alabama, in a clinical trial,” said McAllister, an oncologist at Dothan Hematology and Oncology. Traditional chemotherapy uses chemicals to kill cancer cells that affect the majority of the body. Radioligand therapy delivers a targeted approach to the site of the cancer cell.
The side effects are similar to those of chemotherapy, like nausea or fatigue, but are generally less severe. To qualify for this treatment, doctors look for a specific target on cancer cells that the treatment can lock into. Once the target is identified, the radioactive material is then unloaded into the cell.
“The thought is, if you can target the treatment of the cancer cell at the cell, there would be less toxicity to the rest of the body,” McAllister said. McAllister said pioneering new medicine comes with uncertainty, but the mission is worth it.
“We’ve had this saying that there’s a big difference in helping keep someone alive versus help someone live. And we’re just finding that the more targeted we can become with the cancer treatments, the more people can live and not just be alive,” McAllister said. In a press release, Juli Love, Research Director at Alocent Clinical Trial Care said, “We are proud to offer access to these innovative therapies right here in our community.
”“And like I said, if it doesn’t really work out for me the way I need it to, it’ll help somebody else down the line. Because that’s the only way they can find out, by doing a trial on somebody. And I’m willing to be the guinea pig for them to do it on, to help somebody else,” Woodham said. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
