Friends and family gathered for a retirement celebration in his honor at the Bryant-Conference Center.
) - As a well-known and respected University of Alabama vice president retires, his accomplishments will continue long after he’s gone. He was the first person in his family to attend college, initially getting a maintenance job there after graduating.
Several degrees later, he leaves behind a legacy as the first permanent African American vice president at the university.
“I adopted the three P’s,” Pruitt said. “It’s about the people, it’s about the purpose of what are you trying to do and the potential of what you’re doing to make a difference in folks’ lives. ” Friends and family gathered for a retirement celebration in his honor at the Bryant-Conference Center. Pruitt calls becoming the school’s first Vice President of Community Affairs a career highlight, a job he held for nearly 20 years.
During his tenure, his office created the Parent Teacher leadership Academy and forged partnership with communities around the state.
“I remember looking out the window and thinking two things,” he said. “’Now Lord, what do you want me to do with this right? And then I could hear some of the other pioneers saying to me in my ear, ‘Now you know you can’t mess this up. ’ You feel this pressure, but a lot of people helped me and I’m proud of the success we’ve had together.
