Endometriosis is a chronic health condition that doctors say is frequently underdiagnosed, leaving many patients searching for answers for years.

, an OB-GYN at the Jackson Hospital Clinic who specializes in endometriosis, about what the disease is, why it can be difficult to identify and when patients should seek care. “Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory condition where uterine lining, or tissue that looks like that, actually grows outside of the uterus,” Cubro said.

She says the tissue can grow on different pelvic organs such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic side walls, the bladder or the bowels. “It responds to hormonal changes and behaves like uterine lining, so it kind of menstruates, creating inflammation, and that inflammation causes pain and scarring,” she said.“The most common symptom is severe pain with periods. The pain typically starts a couple of days before, and then gets worse during the cycle and then eases off a few days after the cycle,” she said. “As the disease progresses, they tend to develop almost daily pain. Sometimes they can also have pain with intercourse or bowel problems.”, and she says one reason is that period pain is often normalized.Cubro said patients should see a medical provider if pain interferes with daily activities. “It is very important for our patients to seek help and to be evaluated and do not tolerate severe pain with periods.” Cubro said evaluation typically begins with a discussion of symptoms and family medical history. If endometriosis is suspected, doctors may rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, then attempt to use ultrasound or MRI imaging to detect the disease.called a laparoscopy may be required.
