CLEVELAND, Ohio - Mayor Justin Bibb announced a 90-day action plan to stabilize downtown Cleveland and position it for long-term growth. In a blog post about the plan, Bibb said office vacancies are up in many major downtown areas, work patterns have changed and foot traffic is not what it used to be.
Bibb said in the first 45 days of the plan, the city worked alongside public, private and civic partners to “assess major office buildings, engage property owners and tenants, and begin direct intervention where it is needed most. ” In the next half of the plan, Bibb said the city is focused on tenant retention, support for new and expanding businesses, and decisive action on buildings, especially ones that are troubled.
“It was encouraging to hear about the collaboration, intentional collaboration, bringing people together who are invested in a place to say we’re going to work together and we’re going to have some tangible outcomes,” Howse-Jones said. “The plan that has been laid out for downtown, I definitely think this is something that other neighborhoods can also embrace where you can get those who are in that place, that have their businesses, the people that live there, that actually come together to say, ‘Hey, this is a vision,’” Howse-Jones said.
Jason Beudert, founder Hangry Brands which owns nine downtown Cleveland businesses including Jolene’s and Corner Alley on East 4th, said he is excited about the mayor’s goal to build up the heart of the city.
“I think we need more of what we’re doing. We need folks that maybe have concepts in the suburbs, businesses in the suburbs, that want to come down and really be a part of this renaissance,” Beudert said.
“I think especially East 4th, this is our downtown, this is what we’re all a part of and where we all come, east, west or southern suburbs. So, to come down here and be part of where everybody patronizes, whether you’re going to a game or an event, it’s an honor for us to be down here, so we want to continue to build on that,” Beudert said.
Bibb also wrote about restoring energy to the streets, including return-to-office efforts, improving safety and cleanliness, and activating downtown through small businesses and events as the city heads into the summer months.
