The investigation could take weeks to complete.
DOTHAN , Ala. - Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman plans to present investigative findings from a officer-involved shooting to grand jurors. “Yeah, that’s pretty much automatic for our office,” Goodman told WTVY News4 on Monday. “That way a panel of our citizens can examine the evidence and act accordingly.”
Police say 45-year-old Antonio Christopher King encountered an officer near dusk on Sunday while police answered a complaint about a suspicious person call in a downtown Dothan residential area. King, per police, fired at the responding officer who returned gunfire as King ran into his home at 103 East Lafayette Street. Officers surrounded the home and attempted to reach a peaceful settlement but the standoff ended when King emerged from the home and, per police, starting firing a second time at officers who returned the gunfire, killing King.
Before the exchange, State Bureau of Investigation agents were on the scene, ready to take over the investigation which could take weeks to complete. “We will wait for the SBI report then move on the grand jury from there,” Goodman said. “We certainly won’t interfere or influence the investigation.”
Often, officers who fire their weapons in the line of duty are placed on administrative leave but, in this case, Dothan police will not comment whether any officers are on paid leave. There have been no public accusations that officer acted inappropriately and eyewitnesses, including news reporters, witnessed them make repeated attempts to end the situation peacefully with the use of trained negotiators.
