Following a recent executive order by President Donald Trump prohibiting the Department of Defense from promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) has removed its Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor from its website. While USAFA officials haven't confirmed whether the minor is no longer offered, the program's absence raises concerns about the future of DEI education within the academy.
The United States Air Force Academy ( USAFA ) has removed its Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor from its website following President Donald Trump 's executive order prohibiting the Department of Defense from promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. USAFA officials have declined to confirm or deny whether the minor is no longer available to cadets.
Previously, the Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor was listed on the academy's website alongside 19 other minors, according to an archived version. Anthony Mayne, a USAFA spokesperson, provided a statement to Denver7's sister station in Colorado Springs regarding the future of DEI courses at USAFA. He stated that President Trump's executive order on Monday abolished DEI offices within the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security, and also prohibits military educational institutions from promoting DEI theories.According to the archived USAFA website, which showcased the academy's areas of study, the Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor required a minimum of five classes or 15 credit hours. The offered courses encompassed a range of subjects including history, English, behavioral science, philosophy, geography, and political science, all focusing on gender, sexuality, race, and diversity. Cadets could also fulfill the program requirements through courses centered on the philosophy of law, comparative religion, labor economics, world cultural geography, genocide and mass atrocity, international security, and the Holocaust. The archived website stated that the minor program aimed to 'prepare cadets to lead inclusively within a diverse organization, act responsibly in a diverse society, and meet cross-cultural challenges in a diverse world; and develop respect for human dignity across a wide range of cultures and societies enabling the effective and ethical execution of military operations.' Denver7's sister station in Colorado Springs inquired with USAFA leaders about the implications for cadets currently enrolled in the Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor. At the time of this publication, USAFA had not responded. News5 reached out to several local universities to ascertain if they planned to eliminate any DEI-related degrees or courses. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs stated that 'no academic programs have changed at UCCS.' Dean of Faculty at Colorado College Emily Chan stated, 'We do not have any plans to make curriculum changes right now.
