German Police Chief Sparks Outrage with Controversial Advice to Women

Head of German detectives suggests women avoid relationships with men due to rising crime, sparking debate and criticism over victim-blaming and overlooking migrant crime statistics.

A leading German police official has ignited a national debate with controversial remarks suggesting women should reconsider relationships with men due to escalating crime rates within the country.

Dirk Peglow, the head of the Federal Association of German Detectives (BDK), made the statement during an appearance on ZDF public television, framing it as a response to the increasing number of crimes targeting women. He highlighted alarming statistics, noting that at least two women are victims of homicide or attempted homicide each day in 2024, alongside a consistent rise in reported sexual offenses.

Peglow’s comments quickly spread through German media, sparking widespread criticism and prompting a clarification from the official himself. The controversy stems from Peglow’s seemingly simplistic and arguably victim-blaming approach to a complex issue. While acknowledging the rise in crimes against women, his suggestion that avoiding relationships with men would reduce risk ignores the multifaceted nature of violence and the systemic factors contributing to it.

Furthermore, his statement appeared to downplay or overlook readily available government data indicating a disproportionate involvement of migrants in certain types of crime, particularly sexual assault. Official figures from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reveal a significant increase in reported rapes since 2018, coinciding with a period of heightened immigration. The BKA data shows a 72 percent surge in rape cases during this timeframe.

Critically, the statistics demonstrate that foreign nationals are overrepresented among suspects in rape cases, accounting for 38.5 percent of those suspected, despite comprising only 15 percent of the overall population. The data also suggests a disturbing trend: a higher proportion of rapes are committed by foreign nationals against German women, with 22.3 percent of rape victims also being foreign nationals.

While overall violent crime saw a slight decrease of 2.3 percent last year, migrants still constituted 42.9 percent of all suspects in violent crime cases. It’s important to note that these figures likely underestimate the true impact of migration on crime, as they do not include individuals who have acquired German citizenship or second-generation migrants born to foreign parents within Germany.

Following the intense backlash, Peglow attempted to walk back his initial statement, acknowledging that his words were “clearly expressed in an exaggerated manner” and were not intended as literal advice. He emphasized that his intention was not to foster “general suspicion against men,” and reiterated that “the overwhelming majority of men are not violent and not perpetrators. ” However, the damage was already done, with critics accusing him of promoting harmful stereotypes and shifting blame onto potential victims.

The incident has reignited a broader debate in Germany about immigration, crime, and the safety of women. It also highlights the sensitivity surrounding discussions about the relationship between these issues, particularly in a country grappling with a large influx of migrants and a growing sense of unease about public safety. The focus now shifts to addressing the root causes of violence against women and implementing effective strategies to protect vulnerable populations, rather than resorting to simplistic and potentially damaging advice.

The BDK’s leadership is under pressure to address the controversy and reaffirm its commitment to supporting victims of crime and upholding the principles of justice and equality. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible communication and evidence-based policymaking when addressing complex social issues
