During a roundtable interview, director Travis Knight revealed that if Masters of the Universe performs well enough at the box office to warrant Amazon MGM Studios greenlighting a sequel, he wants to dive deeper into the characters, particularly Adam Glenn.
Masters of the Universe hasn't even been released in theaters yet, but the director of the upcoming action film already knows what he wants to explore in a potential sequel.
During a roundtable interview that ScreenRant participated in, director Travis Knight revealed that if Masters of the Universe performs well enough at the box office to warrant Amazon MGM Studios greenlighting a sequel, he wants to dive deeper into the characters, particularly Adam Glenn, who were introduced in the first installment.
"I think about what happens next for Adam," he said. "Where's the next stage of his life take him now that he's properly He-Man? What does that mean?
" According to Knight, relationships are at the center of the story, so he also wants to see"how those relationships evolve moving forward" should he get the opportunity to create another Masters of the Universe film. Sequels are never guaranteed, of course, with the director acknowledging that the moviegoing audience will ultimately make that decision via their wallets.
Knight would love to stay in this long-running universe, but at the end of the day,"if the world doesn't want them, we won't tell them.
" "In terms of where we could go from here, of course, you always are imagining, and there are things that I wanted to put in this movie that we weren't able to do, things I'd like to explore, characters, deeper aspects of some of these characters that we'd like to explore. I think about what happens next for Adam. Where's the next stage of his life take him now that he's properly He-Man? What does that mean?
And at the essence of it is relationships. It's always about relationships for me. And so how do those relationships evolve moving forward? Ultimately, this stuff is not in our hands.
So as much as we would like to tell more of these stories, if the world doesn't want them, we won't tell them. But if the world demands more of them, we'd be very lucky to be able to tell more stories in this universe.
" Before he can properly think about a potential sequel, he still has his sights set on the first film, which comes out in early June. When he started working on the project, he had the mindsight that he might only get this"one shot" at creating a Masters of the Universe movie, so he wanted to make it the best it could be.
"We put everything we had into it, and I'm incredibly proud of the film," Knight admitted, before adding that the action flick has"incredible heart" and tells an"emotional story" that he's really proud he was able to adapt for the big screen. "I think I always approach these things as if you only get one shot at it.
And if that's the case, and we make this movie and there are no more stories to follow, we put everything we had into it and I'm incredibly proud of the film. I think it's fun. I think it's exciting. I think it has incredible heart.
I think it tells an emotional story and I'm just really proud of the crew who did exceptional work, the actors who brought everything they had to the movie. I'm just really proud of the work that everybody put into it and what we got out of the other side.
" Masters of the Universe is based on the long-running franchise that began in the 1980s and has branched out into comics, TV shows, movies, video games and action figures. The story centers around Adam Glenn as he, Teela and Man-at-Arms attempt to save Eternia from the evil rule of Skeletor.
The very first Masters of the Universe theatrical release was the 1985 animated film The Secret of the Sword that compiled several episodes together from the She-Ra: Princess of Power series. Then, in 1987, a live-action film called Masters of the Universe was released, with Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Unfortunately, it was a flop at the box office and only grossed $17 million. Critics panned the movie, which received a 21% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A reboot has been in development for the past several years, and now Amazon MGM Studios and Knight are less than three weeks away from releasing a new live-action Masters of the Universe film, which stars Nicholas Galitzine, Jared Leto, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, James Purefoy, Alison Brie, Kristen Wiig and Sasheer Zamata.
