) - Many people’s New Year’s resolutions include health, and diet and exercise are commonly lumped in, but there is another area experts do not want people to overlook – their eyes. Dr. Randall Pitts is an eye doctor based out of Clanton who said there are indicators kids need to see a medical professional.

Children showing signs they may have trouble seeing, or who have vision problems in the family, need at least one checkup before they enter kindergarten. Even if they pass the eye exam, the doctor said they could still develop vision problems later into their teenage years. As for adults, Dr. Pitts said they need a checkup every couple of years, but if eye disease runs in their family, this should be more frequent. Many may wonder if they must get their eyes dilated. Dr. Pitts said it is not always necessary, but sometimes needed for children. “The main reason that we do the dilation on children to get the prescription is when you’re young you have a very strong ability to accommodate, almost like a zoom lens,” Pitts said. “When we’re trying to ask you ‘Is this one better? Is that one better?’ Your eye just automatically begins to tighten up and flex the muscle, particularly in the children who are very farsighted, that’s important.”Troy woman’s tragedy finds a ‘sweet’ endingGet past ‘quitters day’ and keep New Year’s Resolutions
