EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - President Donald Trump is urging Republicans to vote yes this week on adding the Railway Safety Act to the Surface Transportation reauthorization bill following the tragedy of East Palestine .
In 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine causing a major hazardous material spill and burn. From the burning chemicals and threat of tanker cars exploding, a plan was developed to control burn what was left in the cars, a plan which was later deemed unnecessary. Ultimately, it was bearing on a stick wheel on one of the railcars that became so hot it melted, causing the entire axel to break and derail.
The community where the derailment occurred complained of several health issues and there were many class action lawsuits with hearings being held in Ohio and at Washington D.C. At the federal level, a new Railroad Safety and Accountability Act was drafted to try and prevent future East Palestine type events. Trump emphasized on social media the importance of passing the Railroad Safety and Accountability Act, saying it cannot be delayed any further.
The president is asking Republicans to vote yes when the Railroad Safety and Accountability Act comes up as an amendment in the Transportation Committee this week.
