Jazz Chisholm, the second baseman for the Yankees, hosted a fundraising event called 'Tunnel Fits and Kicks' that raised over $200,000 for the Jazz Chisholm Foundation, which supports underserved youth and families in New York, the Bahamas, and Florida. The event brought together professional athletes from across New York. In addition to raising funds, Chisholm emphasized the connection between fashion, sports, and culture, which was reflected in the event's theme.
Yankees’ second baseman Jazz Chisholm hosted his charity’s second-ever ‘Tunnel Fits and Kicks’ event on Thursday, bringing together professional athletes from across the New York area.
The event raised over $200,000 for the Jazz Chisholm Foundation, an organization that provides resources for underserved youth and families in New York, the Bahamas, and Florida. For Chisholm, a Nassau, Bahamas native, the event is meaningful because it’s important for him to give back to those in a similar situation to the one he grew up in.
“I didn’t have much, just getting by on people just giving me stuff at the right moments and helping me through life at the right times,” Chisholm told amNewYork. “I feel like I want to be that person for other families and people that don’t have. ” Chisholm told amNewYork that the intersection between fashion, sports, and culture is important to him, hence the tunnel fits the theme for the fundraiser.
“When I first came into baseball, wasn’t nothing about tunnel fits or anything like that, so I feel like it helps everything that describes someone,” he said. “It lets them be free and not feel like they’re boxed in, and that’s what I’m all about.
” Other New York-based athletes in attendance were Yankees shortstop José Caballero, former Yankees pitcher Dellin Betances, New York Giants cornerback Greg Newsome II, NYCFC forward Alonso Martínez, Gotham FC defender Mandy Freeman, and Brooklyn FC defender Rocco Romeo. Newsome is new to New York, having signed with the Giants earlier this year, but echoed the sentiment that sports and fashion are connected.
“In this day and age, we’re able to show ourselves, brand ourselves. I think with people being able to make money off their brand, be unique to themselves, I think that’s why it’s growing,” Newsome said to amNewYork. Similarly, Freeman, who’s been playing for Gotham FC since 2017, told amNewYork about the importance of supporting fellow athletes.
“I’m a ride or die for New York,” Freeman said. “No one really knows what it’s like to be a professional athlete unless you are one. Being able to support each other off the pitch speaks volumes, and we really want to support each other and uplift each other. ” Beyond the professional athletes, another special guest was in attendance — Community School 55 principal Luis Torres.
Some proceeds from the first ‘Tunnel Fits and Kicks’ charity event funded aTorres shared with the audience that last week students had their final presentation, showcasing games they built using the computers Chisholm donated.
“The technology that we had before Jazz was not adequate enough for them,” Torres said. “When I came here last year, and we talked about this vision for the computer lab, people who came here probably were thinking ‘oh, that’s just politics. ’ He built that computer lab. He kept his promise.
