Warren Houston faces involuntary manslaughter and other charges after pit bulls mauled daughter, Kingsley Wright
CINCINNATI - Warren Houston is on trial, accused of ignoring warning signs before his two dogs killed his three-year-old daughter. Houston is charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering children, and reckless homicide in the death of his daughter, Kingsley Wright . Kingsley’s mother, Gina, told the judge Houston had only recently learned he was Kingsley’s biological father. Wanting her daughter to know her dad, Gina allowed Kingsley to stay for a week at Houston’s Roselawn apartment. Prosecutors say it was a place Kingsley had never been before.
In the early morning hours of Dec. 27, 2024, Houston’s two pit bull terriers, who weighed about as much as Kingsley did, broke free and mauled her to death as she slept on a couch. Prosecutors say the dogs were kept in a single cage with a broken lock just feet from where Kingsley was sleeping. They say Houston knew one dog, named Chevy, was aggressive, feeding him inside the cage and never giving him toys because he would shred them apart.
Houston’s former girlfriend, who was at the apartment that night, testified she had never seen the dogs act aggressively. The defense calls this a tragic accident no one saw coming.
But prosecutors say Houston knew the lock was broken and had even told Gina that Kingsley would sleep in his room. Both defense and prosecutors labeled this a violent attack. One of the first responding officers became emotional recounting the scene. “I actually didn’t know she was a human. I thought she was a Christmas toy by how she appeared at that moment,” the officer said.
The bench trial will resume Tuesday, where it is expected to hear from the prosecutions criminialist about the evidence collected at the scene.
