An animal cruelty investigation has been launched after the discovery of 25 dead dogs at a Matanuska-Susitna property.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - An animal cruelty investigation has been launched after the discovery of 25 dead dogs on a property in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Content Warning: This article contains video and information that some readers might find disturbing.

The criminal investigation comes after Alaska State Troopers joined Mat-Su Borough Animal Control on a request to check out the location in the Caswell Lakes area, roughly midway between Talkeetna and Willow.Alaska’s News Source obtained video from a viewer who recorded it during a Facetime showing the property where the dogs were found. Alyssa Buser, who owns and operates the Susitna Sled Dog Adventures with her partner Rohn — the son of four-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser — said there had been concerns about the lack of care for the dogs on the property for months. Buser said complaints to the borough and animal control were being sent in as early as January, and made repeated requests herself to authorities to check on the dogs. “We have a whole community here who cares about dogs, and, ‘Promise me that you will check in on them, and you will make sure that they’re going to be okay,’” Buser told Alaska’s News Source. On Easter, Buser said the landlord of the property with the dogs told her that all the dogs were gone, which she assumed meant all the dogs had been adopted out.“We thought it was rather odd there was one dog left,” said Holly Lynn, a friend of Buser’s. Ultimately, Buser had a friend — Michael Dolinar — check on the property and discovered what they feared most. Questions also arose about what could have been done to prevent the deaths. Sarah Loreth was also near the scene Thursday and told Alaska’s News Source that authorities were alerted for months and locals volunteered to take care of the dogs. “They said ‘Absolutely not, it’ll interfere with the investigation, you cannot go on property, cannot feed the dogs, cannot take the dogs,’” Loreth said. Alaska’s News Source has reached out to Mat-Su Animal Control and the Department of Public Safety for more information and have not immediately heard back as of Thursday afternoon.Note: This is a developing story.
