A judge on Monday sentenced David Wayne Weddle, 60, to three consecutive life terms for a drunk-driving crash that killed two women and seriously injured another driver
MARIANNA, FL -A Jackson County judge on Monday sentenced David Wayne Weddle , 60, to three consecutive life terms for a drunk-driving crash that killed two women and seriously injured another driver, less than two years after Weddle received a DUI in Georgia, State Attorney Larry Basford announced.
A judge sentenced David Wayne Weddle on May 5, 2026 to life terms for causing a deadly Florida panhandle wreck. A jury found Weddle of two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of DUI with serious bodily injury. Circuit Judge Ana Maria Garcia ordered the life sentences to be served one after another.
“This defendant did not take responsibility for his actions and repeatedly made choices — drinking more than a 12-pack daily by his own admission — that put the public in danger,” said Assistant Chief Prosecutor Mark Graham. “His actions killed two innocent women and seriously injured a third victim. ”Prosecutors said the crash happened around 2 p.m. Sept. 5, 2021, at the intersection of El Bethel Church Road and U.S. 90.
Trial testimony from witnesses and Florida Highway Patrol Trooper L. Battle said Weddle was driving south on El Bethel Church Road when he ran a stop sign and slammed into the passenger side of a westbound Cadillac on U.S. 90. The impact pushed the Cadillac into the eastbound lane, where it collided with a Jeep, according to testimony. Both women in the Cadillac were killed.
The Jeep caught fire, and its driver — who suffered two broken legs — escaped but collapsed, prosecutors said. An expert witness testified that blood drawn roughly two hours after the crash indicated Weddle’s blood alcohol content at the time of the wreck was estimated to be between .11 and .15, according to the state. Weddle testified he did not remember the crash.
Basford credited the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for their work on the case.
