in Pascagoula Thursday before being shot and killed by deputies has an extensive criminal past, according to documents obtained by WLOX News. 59-year-old David Ray Wyrick served time for involuntary manslaughter after shooting a man in North Carolina, assaulted a Florida deputy with a metal pipe, and was reported missing last year— all this before he ended up in Mississippi.

Officials say he stole a truck from a construction site and just moments later, crashed into a fence and ignited propane tanks near the Jackson County Emergency Management building and communication tower in an attempt to create an explosion.

David Wyrick, the North Carolina man who attempted to set off an explosion near government buildings in Pascagoula Thursday before being shot and killed by Jackson County deputies, has an extensive criminal past, according to documents obtained by WLOX News.

Public records show Wyrick faced nine criminal charges during this 17-year period. Information is not available on the charge type, convictions, or time served.

Wyrick shot and killed a man outside his home, but claimed it was “partly by accident, and partly out of self-defense,” according to a 2003The report says Wyrick saw car lights outside his home after dark, took a pistol with him to investigate when he heard his dogs barking, and shot a man in the head in the driveway. Wyrick had previously met the man because he had purchased a puppy from Wyrick and had plans to purchase a second.

Wyrick testified in court that he was scared because he didn’t expect anyone to be on his property at that time. He also testified that he didn’t intend to fire the pistol and wasn’t aiming at the trespasser. Wyrick is convicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge, and his sentence begins, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.

Public records show Wyrick faced five criminal charges during these 18 years. Information is not available on the charge type, convictions, or time served., attempting to grab his service gun and hitting him in the face with a metal pipe. Law enforcement responded to a call in Key Largo, Florida, for a man— later identified as Wyrick— putting boulders in the roadway and tampering with fire hydrants. When speaking with deputies, Wyrick took out a pocketknife, then resisted arrest, even after being shocked with a taser.

Wyrick hit Sgt. Robert Dosh was in the face with a metal pipe with a nail attached to it while deputies attempted to place him in custody. He also tried to grab two deputies’ guns during the struggle. Wyrick was ultimately taken to jail and charged with attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting arrest with violence.

Onslow County Sheriff’s Office asks for the public’s help in finding Wyrick. He had last been seen a month earlier at his home in Swansboro, North Carolina, according to WLOX News sister stationAt the time, he was reported to be driving a black Infinity with North Carolina tags KIM-G37S. It was reported that Wyrick had a cross tattoo on his chest, a sun with a cross on his right arm, and “One Judge” on his back.

A warrant was issued for Wyrick out of Monroe County, Florida, by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The warrant, which was still active at the time of Wyrick’s death, was for one count of probation violation.

Wyrick was eventually located thanks to an “international tip,” according to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, though no further details were given on the tip.

Wyrick crashed a white Chevy Silverado truck into a fence near the Jackson County Emergency Management building. He then parked by a large propane tank, just next to the dispatch communication tower, and set the propane tanks that were in the back of the truck on fire. A witness alerted the nearby Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and two deputies went out to the crash.

When the deputies arrived, Wyrick ran away, leading to a brief pursuit, according to MBI. Then, the deputies and the suspect exchanged gunfire, and Wyrick was shot multiple times.Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the tanks on the truck were ablaze for a brief period, but were quickly secured by Jackson County Fire.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WLOX News that the truck Wyrick was driving at the time of the crash was stolen from a construction site in Pascagoula, off the west end of DuPont Avenue. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation , the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating. Authorities have not released information about why Wyrick may have been in the Jackson County area. WLOX is working to learn more.
