Reader on a quest to find out more about Willis R. Fleming’s time with the Missions.
Based on family history, my father Willis R. Fleming briefly played for the Missions as a young man. I have no photos from this period, but it seems to be a well-known fact in the family. My daughters and I met in San Antonio one weekend to honor my father by attending a game there, although of course we know he did not play at Wolff Stadium . Dad was born in 1911; I’m guessing he would have played before going into the Army , so that could have been 1929-1931. A St.
DiMaggio, Ruth played several games in S.A. W.R. Fleming from Illinois Bend, as he was identified in the Express, March 27, 1933, arrived the previous night. With other “new arrivals,” the newspaper predicted, he would be immersed in “limbering-up exercises” to have a squad “polished up” and ready to play the first of two games with the University of Texas Longhorns on March 30.
