CINCINNATI (WXIX - In a stunning development, the murder case from a Cincinnati teen’s fatal shooting ended in a plea deal for the suspect Wednesday after an eyewitness came forward and said he wasn’t the shooter.
Dashaun Jones, 20, pleaded guilty to an amended and reduced charge of attempted murder in the May 2022 slaying of 15-year-old Jerome E. Lipscomb III in the West End. At the request of Hamilton County prosecutors, Common Pleas Court Judge Christopher McDowell dismissed the rest of the charges against Jones: a second murder count, four counts of felonious assault and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. The judge sentenced Jones to 9 to 13.5 years in prison with credit for time served, nearly four years. “For a kid that’s been locked up, who’s been incarcerated for 1,337 days, it was truly like a moment of joy because he got what he had been fighting for,” said his attorney, Brandon Fox.Jones was 16 years old when he was arrested in August 2022 for Jerome’s death. He has been locked up ever since, mostly at the Hamilton County jail, because his case was bound over from juvenile court in December 2022, court records show.His attorney believed him and worked tirelessly to uncover the truth.“I’ve had clients lie to us, but I believed him because the evidence matched what he was telling us.” Prosecutors turned over evidence that was Brady material, a witness statement, and then the defense uncovered an additional witness who was an eyewitness to the shooting and indicated that Jones was not the shooter. Judge McDowell, a Republican appointed to the bench last year by Gov. Mike DeWine, determined the eyewitness “to be a material witness and his testimony is necessary for the just outcome of the above captioned case,” court records show.The victim’s mother briefly addressed the court at Wednesday’s hearing.Instead, the grieving parent explained how she felt the day her son died: “On May 29, at approximately 10:30, is when my day went dark. My darkest fear became my reality the day I lost my only son.
