FREMONT , Ohio - The citizen-led group Dads Against Predators was back in Fremont this week trying to bust people looking to meet with kids for sex.in Fremont as city leaders went looking into old case law to file the charges.
Authorities did charge a 68-year-old man from Tiffin after talking to him and doing investigating on their own.Nearly 200 people came to the Denny’s in Fremont this week, but it wasn’t for dinner. Joshua Mundy from Dads Against Predators put a call out to the public. After posing a teen online, they connected with a man and allegedly organized a meet-up for a sexual encounter. “Brining hundreds of people to Denny’s probably isn’t the best thing legally to do but I think it sends a message that people really care and they’ll get off their butts and they want change and they’re pretty vocal about it,” said Mundy. After the crowd dispersed and detectives spoke with Ronald Callahan, 68, of Tiffin, police gathered enough information to charge him with attempted importuning. Chief Derek Wensinger says they’ve reviewed case law they were not previously aware of and they believe this charge is appropriate. After the 52nd operation in Fremont from Mundy’s group, their effort finally resulted in a criminal charge. “This could be the first step toward something bigger and change. I’m interested to see where it goes from here,” said Mundy. “I feel like a fisherman in a village. I go out and I catch fish and I bring them back to the village. I feel like I am doing something good with my life.” Mundy met with Fremont’s police chief and mayor along with the Sandusky County sheriff this week after the crowd at Denny’s, plus a similar operation at the Sheetz gas station which is outside the Fremont city limits. The crowd arriving at a restaurant like this does present a dangerous situation and police do not want to see that again. Mundy sees this whole week, though, as a step in the right direction. “Changing the culture. We want to change the attitudes about how people feel about pedophilia and child predators in the community, said Mundy.Fremont Police said in a statement this week that Dads Against Predators does operate outside the parameters of a lawful investigation, but did say they would review video and chats to help corroborate allegation of misconduct. According to a press release from the Fremont Police Department, Ronald Callahan, 68, was arrested and charged with attempted importuning after an investigation into a disturbance call at Denny’s.Man who claims girl found in suitcase is his daughter says he begged courts and CPS for helpOhio dental board revokes Medina dentist’s anesthesia license after patient deathHigh winds blast Northeast Ohio: Damages, power outages, closures
