Lockheed Martin displayed the prototype Increment 4 Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) is planned to follow the critical path to hit the target.
An American weapon manufacturer recently showcased its prototype Increment 4 Precision Strike Missile design. Lockheed Martin displayed the concept during the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual convention on October 13.
Displayed with no identification, the model will be equipped with a ramjet with a solid rocket motor. The company plans to deliver the weapon with a combined-cycle propulsion system. This is expected to deliver a range of more than 620 miles .The missile is expected to follow critical path to hit the target. This makes missile tough to be intercepted by enemy weapons.Dual mode motorShowcased for the first time, the design includes a dual mode motor to deliver long ranges. Reports have revealed that the first flight test for Increment 4 could be conducted in 2026. The test will prove the weapon’s long-range capability and precision.“We’re really excited about the flight test coming up. Just to demonstrate how far we can achieve without dropping any boosters, which is what separates us from any competition. We’re not dropping anything over water, over land, or over friendly troops,” said Scott Prochniak, S&BD, Principal at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.Currently, Lockheed develops 120 PrSMs per year in an automated facility. However, these versions of PrSMs deliver 320-mile range. The surface-to-surface weapon system provides the Joint Force Commander with increased range, lethality, survivability, and missile load out.Long-range capabilityThese enhanced capabilities are critical to the successful execution of fires in support of combined Joint All-Domain Operations.PrSM offers artillery units a new long-range capability supporting brigade, division, corps, Army, theater, Joint and Coalition forces.Increment 4 Precision Strike Missile design features mid-body aerodynamic strakes, a blister fairing running lengthwise from nose to tail and four aft-mounted control surfaces. Lockheed offered little evidence of the nature of the “enhanced seeker” tied to PrSM Inc. 4 in Army budget justification documents. A small radome-like fairing is installed on the nose of the missile, which indicates perhaps an active or passive radio frequency seeker, reported Aviation Week.Lockheed claims that PrSM is engineered for unmatched performance and adaptability to future missions. The weapon’s modular design offers an easy path to future growth. Future increments with increased capability will provide even greater flexibility to commanders.Advanced technologiesThe previous version is compatible with MLRS M270 and HIMARS family of launchers. Lockheed Martin’s PrSM technology is claimed to be mature, proven, affordable, and low-risk.Lockheed Martin is using digital tools, process automation and advanced technologies that have improved PrSM producibility, quality, and performance.The company claims that digital transformation introduces modern, smart technologies and new ways of working at scale, eliminating tedious tasks and focusing on innovation, learning new skills and collaborating effortlessly across the corporation.PrSM flights employ a model-based approach for system engineering through design, simulation, and production.
