US Navy’s second Ford-class aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy sets sail for its first shipbuilder sea trials after years of construction.

The U.S. Navy ’s next Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier , the USS John F. Kennedy , has begun its first shipbuilder sea trial s, a major step toward its planned delivery in March 2027. The trials mark the first time the aircraft carrier has operated in open waters, moving beyond construction and dockside testing at the shipyard.

Huntington Ingalls Industries , the carrier’s builder, confirmed that the Kennedy departed Newport News, Virginia, this week to begin the tests. According to Business Insider, the shipbuilder’s sea trials are designed to evaluate the vessel’s core systems and overall performance at sea before it is formally delivered to the U.S. Navy. The USS John F. Kennedy is the second carrier in the Ford class, following the USS Gerald R. Ford , and is expected to incorporate lessons learned from the technical and scheduling challenges that affected the lead ship.First open-sea test after years of constructionUnlike earlier propulsion tests conducted in rivers near the shipyard, the current trials represent the carrier’s first real-world test in open maritime conditions. These trials serve as a critical validation phase, ensuring the ship can safely and reliably operate at sea.“These trials will test important ship systems and components at sea for the first time,” Todd Corillo, a spokesperson for HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division, told Business Insider. He described the trials as a key milestone before the Navy begins its own acceptance testing process.Construction of the USS John F. Kennedy began in February 2011 with a first-steel-cut ceremony. The ship’s keel was laid in August 2015, and the construction was roughly halfway complete by mid-2017, right when the first Ford-class supercarrier USS Gerald R. Ford was commissioned into the U.S. Navy. Although the second carrier was initially expected to be delivered earlier in the decade, its handover date has shifted several times and is now projected for March 2027.Design changes and lessons from USS Gerald R. FordThe Kennedy has benefited from design and production changes introduced after problems emerged on the USS Gerald R. Ford. The first ship in the class faced persistent issues with integrating new technologies, including advanced aircraft arresting gear and weapons elevators, which contributed to delays and cost overruns.According to The War Zone, the Kennedy also differs from the Ford in key technical areas. Most notably, it is fitted with the AN/SPY-63 Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar, replacing the Dual Band Radar used on the Ford, which proved difficult to maintain and integrate. The Navy also altered its delivery strategy for CVN-79. As Business Insider noted, the service abandoned an earlier two-phase delivery plan in 2020 and opted instead for a single-phase approach that would see the carrier delivered with full capability to operate F-35C stealth fighters. That decision added years of additional work but was intended to avoid post-delivery capability gaps. The vessel has a length of 1,092 feet and its flight deck width will be 256 feet. The carrier will have a full load displacement of 100,000 tons .Supercarrier capacity pressures and strategic contextThe start of sea trials comes as the U.S. Navy faces mounting pressure on its aircraft carrier fleet. Delays in delivering new Ford-class carriers coincide with the planned retirement of aging Nimitz-class ships, raising concerns about maintaining the minimum legal requirement of 12 operational carriers. After the USS John F. Kennedy enters service, the next Ford-class carriers scheduled for delivery are the USS Enterprise and USS Doris Miller , planned for commissioning in 2030 and 2032, respectively. The Navy has also announced the future USS William J. Clinton and USS George W. Bush .With its first sea trials now underway, the USS John F. Kennedy moves from construction toward operational testing, representing a critical step in the Navy’s effort to modernize its carrier force and stabilize future fleet capacity.
