Bill Barnes was an infantryman in Italy and later joined the JAG Corps. Family and friends feted him with a tres leches cake and a Cracker Barrel breakfast.

Clutching a cane, World War II veteran Bill Barnes walked steadily and with purpose into a Cracker Barrel on Northeast Loop 410 . Waiting for him in the dining room was a tres leches cake, minus the candles. If the cake had candles, there would have been a lot of them. Aug. 30 — the day Barnes was born in 1920 in Atkinson , Neb.

Barnes is the oldest of three San Antonio-area World War II vets who participate in periodic veterans' breakfasts. Two others who have made it to the century mark are Pedro Vera and Fernando Aguirre, who are 102 and 101, respectively. The organizer of the breakfasts, semi-retired H-E-B pharmacist Russell Minor, said 125 veterans of various conflicts take part. In 2013, the World War II vets alone numbered 113.
