Drivers in Croydon have secured a major win as the local council reduces the size of a contentious yellow box junction that had generated nearly £2 million in fines. The move follows a tribunal ruling that the junction was disproportionately large and unfairly penalized motorists.
Motorists in Croydon, southeast London, have won a significant victory after the local council scaled back a highly controversial yellow box junction that had generated nearly £2 million in fines since its installation in 2017.
The junction, located on Addiscombe Road, had been a source of frustration for drivers, who argued that its excessive size led to unfair penalties. Campaigners, including Sam Wright, known as the Yellow Box Guru, had long criticized the junction, claiming it was disproportionately large and designed to maximize revenue rather than improve traffic flow.
The yellow box, which extended across the private driveway of the No 1 Croydon office building, forced drivers to wait for unreasonable gaps to avoid fines of £160. An investigation by Mr. Wright revealed that the junction had generated 26,244 fines, totaling around £1.9 million in revenue for the council. His efforts culminated in a tribunal case earlier this year, where a parking adjudicator ruled that the yellow box was fundamentally flawed and disproportionately large.
The adjudicator not only quashed the fine of the motorist who appealed but also ordered the council to cancel all outstanding fines related to the junction. Following the tribunal's decision, Croydon Council conducted a review and reduced the size of the yellow box, replacing part of it with 'Keep Clear' road markings. Mr. Wright praised the council's decision, stating that it would save hundreds, if not thousands, of drivers from the hassle of receiving unfair fines.
He also urged other London councils to review their yellow box junctions, suggesting that many could be similarly flawed. A spokesperson for Croydon Council confirmed that the changes were made in response to community feedback and to ensure the efficient flow of traffic. They emphasized that the council would continue to balance safety and resident concerns while managing its highways
