Last week, the Strays and Needtobreathe teased a forthcoming new song in which the Strays’ Brandon Coleman joins Needtobreathe ’s Bear Rinehart.
The two lend gospel-drenched harmony to a song titled “Momma Loves Me.” Wednesday, Rolling Stone debuted on its website a mini-documentary about the making of the single from video production company Caravan. While the partnership might seem like a long shot – an upstart south Alabama roots-rock band teaming up with a group that has been topping Christian music charts for nearly 20 years – the video makes it seem like it was fated. People are also reading… In it, Coleman tells how much of an influence Needtobreathe was on him: “That’s kind of just the band of my childhood and growing up. There was a song for just about every major event. It’s just wild being able to work with them now.” Rinehart describes getting to know Coleman at home in Mobile as well as via professional encounters on the road. “I played it for him backstage at an event we did, this charity thing we did together,” Rinehart says of the new song. “He was like, ‘Why is this song not out?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know. Do you want to be on it?’” Portions of the short film show recording session work with Dave Cobb at his Georgia Mae studio in Savannah, Ga. Cobb is a multiple Grammy winner whose credits include high-profile projects such as Chris Stapleton’s “Traveler” and Jason Isbell’s “Southeastern” and “Something More Than Free.” He also produced the Strays’ breakout 2024 album “Made by These Moments.” The setting looks like the common space of a family home, adapted for use with acoustic baffles, recording gear and an isolation booth. Coleman praises Cobb for his ability to capture the chemistry in a room at a given moment. Rolling Stone quoted Rinehart as saying that he knew Coleman would be a perfect partner on the song’s vocals. “I just knew Brandon and the band would relate to this song, because they’ve stayed completely true to what they believe, and that is so refreshing to me,” he said. “I don’t think I have ever seen somebody have the kind of success they’re having and also be exactly who they are all the time.” The video credits “Momma Loves Me” as a Needtobreathe song featuring the Red Clay Strays. Both Coleman and Strays guitarist Drew Nix are listed; Cobb is credited as producer, mixer and guitarist. The song is due for release on Sept. 5.
