The teen was driving at speeds of 64-57 mph, which is 29-22 mph over the posted limit in a 35 mph zone, court records show
WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A teen is accused of speeding at least 20 miles over the limit and causing a crash that killed an 83-year-old man, according to court and crash records. He was charged with misdemeanor vehicular homicide last month, when he also turned 18, court records show. In addition, the teen was cited with reckless driving, failure to maintain control and speeding.
His lawyer filed a motion pleading not guilty on his behalf. When the case returned to court for a pretrial hearing Monday, Judge Daniel Phillips gave the teen driving privileges for work and school purposes only.
The teen, who lives in suburban Dayton, remains in the care of his parents, is under court monitoring and must obey all laws and attend school.Charles W. Hughes died Jan. 6 after suffering serious injuries in a West Chester Township crash on Dec. 8, his son says.
West Chester police determined the teen was driving at an “unsafe speed” of 64-57 mph, which was 29-22 mph over the posted 35 mph limit, at the time of the crash on Cox Road at Monticello Drive, according to the crash report and complaint to court. Police allege the teen “failed to maintain control off the road to the right, operating a motor vehicle in a reckless/negligent way, causing the death of another...” He was behind the wheel of a Dodge Durango SUV traveling south on Cox Road after dark around 6 p.m., approaching Monticello Drive, the crash report states. Charles W. Hughes was driving eastbound in a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck on Monticello Drive and stopped at the stop sign, waiting to turn northbound onto Cox Road, the crash report states. He began to turn left from the stop, and the SUV struck the front left corner of his pickup truck, according to the crash report.
The SUV continued into the front yard of a residence in the 8500 Cox Road, hitting a parked and unoccupied vehicle and then the corner of the house, the crash report states. Hughes and a 19-year-old backseat passenger in the SUV suffered serious injuries and were taken to UC West Chester Hospital. He said Daisy was ejected from the truck, and he found her lying in the road, dead, when he got there. Charles W. Hughes and his dog, Daisy, died as a result of a crash on Cox Road and Monticello Drive on Dec. 8, 2025, his son says.
The crash report indicates his dad was not wearing a seatbelt. Everyone in the SUV was.Hughes suffered a broken neck, back and ribs and died at the hospital on Jan. 6, said his son, who is named Charles R. Hughes after his dad. “It was terrible,” he recalled Monday. The teen “really created a lot of damage. These kids have got to understand that’s a deadly weapon they are driving.”
Now, he said he wants the teen to be held accountable: “I really want to ensure that he understands his actions have consequences. “This was so preventable. The high speed in a residential area is what gets me. It burns me up to think he was going that fast. If it were an accident, that would be one thing. Everybody goes a little bit over the speed limit. We’re all guilty of it. But this was negligence. He decided to put that pedal to the floor and go so fast.”
The crash report notes there are no street lights, and Hughes failed to yield. His son said he believes the SUV came up too fast for that to be reasonably possible.“He was 83 going on 50,” his son said. “Just a week before, he was out with me in the yard cutting down a tree. He was just one of those guys, a strong Navy veteran, he was a strong guy. He didn’t use a walker. He got around good.”
