Sixteen months after the Palisades fire displaced hundreds, Kehillat Israel congregation in Pacific Palisades reopens its renovated sanctuary, symbolizing resilience and community healing. Cantor Chayim Frenkel reflects on 40 years of service as the congregation marks a significant milestone in their recovery journey. The emotional return underscores the deep bonds of faith and community in the aftermath of disaster.

After sixteen months of displacement following the devastating Palisades fire in January 2025, Kehillat Israel , a prominent Jewish congregation in Pacific Palisades , returned to its newly renovated sanctuary on May 15, 2026.

The emotional reopening marked a significant milestone for the nearly 900-family congregation, which had seen over 200 of its members lose their homes entirely in the fire. The fire, which displaced hundreds, reshaped the community and tested the resilience of its residents. Cantor Chayim Frenkel, who has served the congregation for 40 years, described the return as an emotional moment, both personal and communal.

At 23, Frenkel arrived at the synagogue in 1985, a decade after his own bar mitzvah, and has since been a cornerstone of the spiritual life of Pacific Palisades. The milestone reopening also coincided with the 40th anniversary of Frenkel and his wife, Marci Frenkel, serving the congregation, a period that has mirrored the growth and challenges of the community itself. Founded in 1950 by a small group of families, Kehillat Israel began as a modest congregation of 240 families.

Today, it stands as a robust spiritual anchor with nearly 900 families, reflecting the expansion and resilience of the Palisades community. The reopening ceremony included a symbolic moment where Frenkel’s daughter, Mandi, carried a Torah scroll saved during the Holocaust into the new sanctuary, a powerful representation of continuity and survival. During the Shabbat services, Frenkel and his family lit candles, underscoring the deep communal bonds that have endured through adversity.

Councilwoman Traci Park attended the service, highlighting the significance of the synagogue’s role in the broader community recovery. For Frenkel, the return to the sanctuary is not just a physical rebuilding but a spiritual and emotional rebirth. He reflected on the transformation of the area, likening it to a Garden of Eden that once burned but is now being rebuilt.

The congregation’s journey back to their spiritual home serves as a beacon of hope for the broader Palisades community, still navigating the path to recovery. The fire, which fundamentally altered the landscape and the lives of its residents, has become a catalyst for communal reflection and renewal
