If you’re raising a child with autism, you know how hard it can be to find a space where they truly belong. So Courtney Cotton decided to build one in Enterprise.
“When my son was two, he was diagnosed with level three autism. And before that, I knew nothing about the autism community. And that kind of just opened my eyes to a lot of it,” Cotton said. That curiosity led to a degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, where she learned to analyze the behaviors of individuals on the autism spectrum.
“And then, when his OT had seen progress, she said, ‘Hey, have you thought about helping other kids?’” Cotton said. If you’re raising a child with autism in the area, you know how hard it can be to find a space where they truly belong. So Cotton decided to build one. “Just having a child that’s on the spectrum and just going to playgrounds or going to jump parks or doing things that there was just an excessive amount of people...It was just really hard for him to regulate himself. And he got overstimulated and overwhelmed. I just wanted somewhere that he could go and just be him,” Cotton said. Our Place Sensory Gym, located at 801 Daleville Ave in Enterprise, is filled with equipment such as swings and trampolines to help manage anxiety and improve focus. It’s a space that’s not only desired but also necessary for children with autism, according to speech-language pathologist Angela Sims with Helping Hands Therapy. “That just helps increase their neurons and how they learn, and their whole overall development,” Sims said. Cotton has a message for parents who are in the shoes she once wore, nervous about what the future may hold. “There’s a community to support you, and it’s going to be okay. Your child is amazing just the way they are,” Cotton said.Call 334-464-2451 for more information. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
