The 49-year-old TV personality purchased the four-bedroom Georgian property for £2.8 million in July 2024, even before her husband, Charlie Thomson, had a chance to see it. Her determination to secure the house led her to write a heartfelt letter to the elderly owner, Penelope, explaining why it would be the perfect home for her family. Penelope was so moved by Alex's plea that she agreed to sell the property to her.
When Charlie returned from New Zealand, he immediately fell in love with the house, describing it as feeling like home the moment they stepped inside. The mansion, previously owned by John Lennon and Ringo Starr, is located in a prestigious area where homes command high prices, with detached properties averaging £2.45 million and semi-detached properties around £630,571.
Alex moved her three children—Teddy, nine, Kit, six, and Annie, four—from their previous home in West London to the countryside, where they have already experienced the benefits of cleaner air. Alex noted that her children's persistent coughs, which they suffered from in London, have completely disappeared since the move.
However, the renovation process is far from straightforward. Alex and Charlie plan to undertake extensive work on the property, which may take decades to complete. Their vision includes a single-storey extension to create a supersized kitchen diner overlooking the vast gardens, four new bedrooms upstairs, and the consolidation of four rooms downstairs into a more open living space.
The interior also requires a complete overhaul, as the current decor is described as 'care home chic,' reflecting the tastes of the previous elderly occupants. The kitchen, installed in 1976, is particularly outdated, featuring an antique fridge and a heated cupboard for tea towels. Alex jokes that stepping into the kitchen feels like entering a 'time machine.
' The couple also has plans for the property's outbuilding, which they may need to live in during the renovation. Despite the challenges, Alex is excited about the potential of the house and the positive impact the move has had on her family. She has been documenting the renovation process on social media, sharing her plans and progress with her followers.
