The annual Midnight Sun Run is on the mind for around 800 participants already as preparations begin for the celebratory solstice event.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The annual Midnight Sun Run is on the mind for around 800 participants already as preparations begin for the celebratory solstice event. While the course for the run has seen changes related to road construction, “there’s no changes to the course this year,” said Wendy Cloyd , the director of the Midnight Sun Run .

Though there are no significant changes to be noted, registration is well underway in a way that is fairly significant according to Cloyd. “We have 35 states represented, including Alaska, so far,” as well as “four different countries registered so far, which is fantastic, because that’s always a worry when we’re having a little bit of international turmoil that we might not attract guests from other countries,” she added. Those four countries include Hong Kong, Japan, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Cloyd is confident that number will go up as many interior residents register closer to the start of the race. But even as is, the nearly 800 participants is “really high for this time of year,” according to Cloyd.“People who have endured this crazy, cold, long winter, they’re like, they just need to look forward to some sunshine.” Some things that remain unpredictable are weather and fire disruptions, but Cloyd said, “fingers crossed, with all the snow we have, we won’t have quite as much smoke this year.”“That program is going to start this year, April 20th, a little bit later than usual because of all that snow,” she said. “I think we’ll still be in snow and slush and puddles, but we’re starting April 20th.” With the late start, those that choose to participate in the training program will have 8 weeks to prepare for the Midnight Sun Run.Woman finds out abandoned dog was left behind by family who was deportedUAF Grad student works on project to better detect offshore earthquakes
