Seattle Seahawks Sale Process Slower Than Expected, Despite Championship and Expansion Rumors

The sale of the Seattle Seahawks, who won the Super Bowl in 2026, is taking longer than expected, despite the team's championship and the NBA's expansion plans to Seattle. The sale could be worth up to $11 billion, making it one of the most expensive sports franchises in the city.

The Seattle Seahawks have been officially on sale since February, so far, any public advance on the sale has been quite limited. Three months in, why is the process apparently going slower than normal? Let's be clear, it has nothing to do with a championship franchise.

The defending Super Bowl champs appear to be a contender for a long time to come, with NFL Executive of the Year John Schneider and a star head coach in Mike Macdonald. SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - FEBRUARY 11: Head coach Mike McDonald of the Seattle Seahawks celebrates with fans during the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl LX victory celebration and parade at Lumen Field on February 11, 2026 in Seattle, Washington.

Perhaps most importantly for this article's perspective, an incredibly loyal and ferocious fanbase in the 12s. So if the sale is coming down a little slower than most experts expect, here are a couple of potential reasons as to why:The two most exciting sports stories of 2026 so far are the Seahawks winning Super Bowl 60 and the NBA announcing that it was exploring expansion to Seattle.

Of course, within a couple of weeks of winning it all, the Hawks were announced to be formally for sale. Shortly thereafter, this spring, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the league was exclusively looking at Seattle and Las Vegas for expansion clubs. The Seahawks could sell for anywhere from $7-11$ billion dollars. The Supersonics expansion fee, should it go through, would be north of $6 billion.

That's a lot of money for sports franchises in one city, even one that has the corporate dollars that Seattle does. SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 08: The NFL logo adorns the uniform of a referee prior to the start of Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots at Levi's Stadium on February 08, 2026 in Santa Clara, California.

That is in no way to insinuate that neither would happen; it's just a potential explanation for the slight delay. So this is a similar point to what was made before, but from a different aspect. If the Seahawks sold for, say, $9 billion as the ESPN story speculates, that's 33% more than the RECORD NFL franchise sale of the Washington Commanders for just over $6 billion in 2023.

Not a ton of people who don't already have their hand in a franchise have that kind of cash. Someone will have it. The NFL ownership opportunity is too good to pass up, but if you're looking for a cause for the perceived delay in concrete news on the sale, you'd have to look at this. Built uniquely to keep the cheers of 12s in the venue, making the Seahawks' homefield advantage second-to-none.

FILE - Lumen Field and Elliott Bay is seen, Jan. 26, 2026, in Seattle. It's true that there's a ten-year extension option that, at least on paper, seems easy. But any new owner will have to figure out whether or not they want to follow that route, go for renovations, or, in the least likely scenario, go for a totally new stadium.

For some potential bidders, it could be a reason for more examination or potentially even a pause. A new stadium, while a revenue generator, would need significant private funding in all likelihood -- even if that again appears to be the most far-fetched idea. In short, easy solution or not, it's an issue that almost immediately gets to the docket for the new owner. Still, none of these are major hurdles.

Let's be clear, the Seahawks will sell this year and will do so for a record number. When you're talking about the price tag that you are, anything near and far---even the conflict in Iran--- can factor into spending this kind of money.
