The Green Bay Packers are slated to play the Philadelphia Eagles for the Sept. 6 season opener in Sao Paulo.
GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN - DECEMBER 06: Aaron Rodgers #12 and Aaron Jones #33 of the Green Bay Packers celebrate following a 77 yard touchdown run during the fourth quarter of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lambeau Field on December 06, 2020 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs said Thursday his team cannot wear its usual green during its Week 1 trip to Brazil this year, citing concerns about "gangs." The Packers are slated to play the Philadelphia Eagles for the Sept. 6 season opener in Sao Paulo. Speaking on the “Green Light with Chris Long”They said that the part of Brazil we going to – you can’t even wear green at,” Jacobs said. “I guess something to do with the gangs and stuff.” The two teams will play at Corinthians Arena, the home of the Corinthians soccer club. The Corinthians are rivals with the green-clad Palmeiras and reportedly have a ban on wearing the color. In 2021, after then-Corinthians player João Alves, or Jô, wore green boots against Bahia, the club fined and warned him against wearing them again in games or practice, according to. Jô reportedly said he would never use the boots or disrespect the team and its fans due to his history with the Corinthians.“They said, ‘We not going to Rio.’ They was like, ‘man, this one of them places where they probably won’t even let us leave the hotel,’” he explained. Former NFL player calls for racially segregated game to replace Pro Bowl: 'Sick of average white guys' I said, ‘Bro, why are we out here? We be doing all of that. Why are we here? Like, what’s going on?’” he added. “I was looking forward to it. I’m like, ‘man, it's about to be a fun week.’ And they got to telling us all of that. They like, ‘yeah, nah, it’s not going to be like that.’” The NFL has said the event is a way to attract more Brazilian fans. The league has more than 38 million fans in the country, it claimed. “Brazil has established itself as a key market for the NFL, and we are excited to be playing in Brazil and São Paulo for the first time in 2024,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said in December. “We look forward to working with the city of São Paulo, SP Turis and Arena Corinthians to deliver a world-class gameday experience for this passionate and growing fan base.”
