Vinted and FlixBus Failings: Readers Left Out of Pocket After Lost Items

A Vinted buyer lost £100 on a fraudulent handbag sale and a FlixBus passenger lost a £700 gaming console. Both cases demonstrate issues with customer support and security on these platforms, ultimately resolved with assistance from a consumer advice column.

A reader, S.H. from Battersea, London, purchased a coveted Anya Hindmarch leather bucket handbag on Vinted for £100. The price was remarkably low, a fact she now recognizes as a warning sign.

She believed she had selected InPost delivery, but mistakenly chose home delivery. Vinted prematurely marked the parcel as delivered, and she received an envelope containing only office stationery instead of the handbag. Vinted initially refused a refund, citing the expired reporting window, and the seller ignored her attempts to contact him. After intervention from Sally Hamilton, providing photographic evidence of the small envelope delivered, Vinted reconsidered and reimbursed the reader, also blocking the seller.

Separately, R.T. from Liverpool accidentally left a Steam Deck gaming console and memory card (valued at nearly £700) on a FlixBus coach in March. FlixBus initially found the console, but it subsequently went missing from lost property. R.T. undertook a significant journey attempting to locate it himself. He contacted Sally Hamilton on the advice of his father.

The reader with Vinted felt frustrated by the platform’s initial lack of support and the potential for the seller to continue fraudulent activity. The Steam Deck owner was particularly distressed as he relies on the console for entertainment and connection with friends and his girlfriend, especially while recovering from a DVT. FlixBus has acknowledged the poor service and is investigating the incident. Both cases highlight issues with online marketplaces and transport companies regarding lost items and customer support
