Temperatures are tumbling into the 30s this week, and auto experts warn drivers they could encounter some problems.
“Those battery problems never happen at a good time or a good place,” says Clay Ingram with AAA Alabama. Ingram says most car batteries only last about three years and the frigid air can shorten its lifespan even more.
If drivers have had their battery for a couple years, he recommends getting it checked before it is too late and the car will not crank. “They’ve got some great battery testers out there now that can tell you sort of the general health of your battery,” Ingram says. “It can tell you if it’s in pretty good shape or in terrible shape and about to go out on you.”The cold weather is guaranteed to make driver’s tire pressure drop, according to Ingram. If a tire needs 34 PSI and the gauge shows 32 PSI, drivers will likely be okay, however AAA shared drivers really need to address it if the gauge is significantly off. This is often below 30 PSI for most cars. “Having underinflated tires can make you more prone, more likely to have a blowout or a flat of some kind, it wears your tires out a lot faster, and it also affects you gas mileage,” Ingram says. The AAA spokesperson added that drivers lose 2% of their fuel efficiency for every pound of pressure a tire is underinflated. He recommends checking tire pressure once a month and said many discount tire shops around the state will put air in your tires and check the tread for free.Tips for navigating family tensions during the holidays
