Lake Catholic High School announced the passing of its legendary coach and friend, John Gibbons.
Lake Catholic said Gibbons passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends Saturday morning. Gibbons was connected to the Cougars football program for more than two decades, serving as a head coach, mentor and later assistant.
He helped define what Lake Catholic High School football stands for: preparation, toughness, joy in the work and doing things the right way, Lake Catholic said. Gibbons led the Lake Catholic football program from 1985 to 1998, the school shared, a period that was the most successful era in the team’s history. Lake Catholic said during that time, his teams compiled a 113-42 record, won eight North Coast League championships and made seven playoff appearances. The peak of his time with the Cougars came in 1991 and 1992 when Lake Catholic won back-to-back Division III state championships and helped establish the Cougars as a statewide power. Lake Catholic said Gibbons also believed deeply in developing the whole person, encouraging multi-sport athletes, demanding commitment and to surround his players with coaches who were teachers first. The lessons those learned under Coach Gibbons extend far beyond Friday nights, and he shaped the lives of many after their playing days ended. In 2010, Gibbons was inducted into the Lake Catholic Hall of Excellence and later became a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame, what Lake Catholic calls a fitting recognition for the standard and pride he established to the program. Coach Gibbons defined what it meant to be a Cougar — not just through championships, but through the way he formed young men with discipline, joy, and purpose. His impact on our program, our school, and generations of families will endure far beyond the field. Gibbons is survived by his wife, Patty, their nine children, sons- and daughters-in-law and many grandchildren, all of whom were central to his life and shared in his deep commitment to faith, family and football.Children playing near creek discover skull; nearly 50 human bones uncovered, coroner saysLake County corrections officer/SWAT team member passes awayGuardians-Cubs game tonight postponed; doubleheader set for SundayCleveland Browns News and Rumors 04/04/26: JOK Speeds On During an Otherwise Inert Saturday
