Newly-released video shows the moment a recovery team reached the crew of Artemis II after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, welcoming them back to Earth.

Newly-released video shows the moment a recovery team reached the crew of Artemis II after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, welcoming them back to Earth . The video, released late Monday by Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman , shows the recovery team opening the capsule door on the Orion spacecraft.

A cheering crew awaits inside.

It was all smiles from Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Christina Hammock Koch and Jeremy Hansen, each of them high-fiving the recovery team.

“Jesse, Steve, Laddy, and Vlad….such an incredible feeling to welcome you aboard Integrity after a nearly 700,000-mile journey. Forever thankful for your service to our crew and the nation,” Wiseman wrote on social media.

He was referring to Lt. Cmdr. Jesse Wang, Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Laddy Aldridge, Chief Hospital Corpsman Vlad Link and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Steve Kapala -- the medical dive team that opened the Orion capsule.

During Artemis II’s nearly 10-day mission, the astronauts voyaged deeper into space than the moon explorers of decades past and captured views of the lunar far side never witnessed before by human eyes.

On their record-breaking flyby, the astronauts reached a maximum 252,756 miles from Earth before hanging a U-turn behind the moon.

Wiseman, Glover, Koch and Hansen were the first humans to fly to the moon since Apollo 17 closed out NASA’s first exploration era in 1972.
