While a 13F filing revealed substantial investments in Fidelity's Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) and BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF (IBIT), experts suggest these positions are likely driven by client demands rather than the bank's own directional bets. The filing, which captures ownership as of December 31, 2024, shows a $288 million stake in FBTC and a $1.3 billion stake in IBIT.
It also highlights put option positions with a nominal value exceeding $600 million (along with a smaller call option position). Put options grant the holder the right, but not the obligation, to sell an asset at a predetermined price. This strategy often serves as a hedge against price declines, reflecting a bearish sentiment. James Van Straten, Senior Analyst at CoinDesk, explains that Goldman Sachs' move, mirroring similar strategies employed by other banks and hedge funds, doesn't constitute a net long position. He describes it as a 'basis trade,' also known as the 'cash and carry trade,' aiming to balance potential profits and risks associated with Bitcoin price fluctuations.
