Cuyahoga County officially opened the doors to the new Veterans Service Commission headquarters Friday.
The new headquarters on Chester Avenue is 30,000 square feet and includes parking, training rooms, financial help and case management all in one place.
“To see a facility like this where there’s ample parking, it’s modernized, and all of the services under one roof… I think it’s very important to all the veterans,” Gilliams said. For years, veterans avoided the old location downtown because they couldn’t afford to park. Executive Director Jon Reiss said that barrier cost veterans everything.
“If you’re struggling… and you’re at the point where you’re asking somebody to help pay your bills… you might not have the ten dollars it takes to park,” Reiss said. Reiss, an Army veteran, spent 18 months unemployed after leaving the service and did not know help existed. Now he runs the commission and is making sure no veteran goes without.
“I remember not being aware… and it would have been really nice to know. I want to make sure no veteran has to go through that process like I did,” Reiss said. Robert Sims, a member of the Joint Honor Guard in Richmond, Ohio, said the facility will help veterans who have lost their way.
“It’s a good thing to have something like this for a lot of veterans that lose their way… and they just be out here on the streets,” Sims said.
